What is IGSIG? (In Brief)
IGSIG, the Immersive Gaming Special Interest Group, is an open collective of professionals and hobbyists dedicated to seeing immersive gaming happen as soon as possible. Because immersive gaming is such a massive undertaking, we welcome participation by those from all walks of life, from brain surgeons to science fiction authors to politicians.
We believe that immersive gaming technology is inevitable and is manifesting itself even at the present time. We believe it is important to document the progress of IG-related technologies, and especially to foster communication between the various disciplines that create and exploit them. We hope to be the premiere community supporting this exciting and boundless emerging phenomenon.
Introduction
The purpose of IGSIG is to promote the development of immersive gaming technology. Immersive gaming is a revolutionary and evolutionary step forward from the gaming of the present day. While games of today are mostly guided by our thumbs and rather awkward controllers (or worse, keyboards), immersive gaming uses the player's body as the control device, by interfacing directly with the nervous system.
We believe that this kind of technology is possible, and that it will be developed within the next few decades.
Goals
The short-term goals of the organization are help generate excitement in IG, to provide a forum for the exchange of ideas regarding IG, and to keep a lookout for relevant technological developments. In the long term, we hope to organize research and development in the areas of computer software, electrical engineering, neuroscience, neurosurgery, physiology, nanobiotechnology, biomedical engineering, physics, and mathematics. You can read details about how these fields will contribute to IG in the Making it Happen section.
Getting Involved
If what you've read so far excites you, consider joining IGSIG. You can do this simply by creating an account on the Register page and providing us with a little bit of information about yourself. This will entitle you to contribute your opinions on the discussion forums, and will allow us to credit you with any articles you may submit.
Who Makes it Work?
IGSIG is a member-operated organization. Ideas and content created by the community make up the bulk of the site, which was founded by Antiphon, a computer engineering specialist, and Prodicus, a neuroscience specialist.
